when this experiment is made on the Colony's "vile body," it is not only the right, but the duty of the Colony to protest, and it is incumbent upon those who have strong sentiments on this subject, to give utterance to what they feel, when it is recollected that the apparent cleverness of the trick, by which men even of good ability and clear heads feel themselves outwitted, is but an undermining of the Castle of Truth, and an attempt -it may be hoped an unsuccessful one- to prove that honesty is not always the best policy, and that where a man's reputation with his Department is concerned, any end will justify any means.
